Douglass Community Services Provides Food to Low-Income Seniors at No Cost

August 03, 2020

Douglass Community Services distributes nutritious food to low-income seniors in Ralls County at no cost through The Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP).

When a senior is approved for the CSFP program, they receive a box of food each month worth about $50 for as long as they are eligible and interested in the program. The contents of each box are tailored to meet the dietary needs of seniors. They contain cans of fruits and vegetables, proteins such as canned meat and peanut butter, cheese, grains, and more.

“We are excited to offer this program for the seniors in our community,” said Stacey Nicholas, Community Outreach Initiatives Director. “Some of the items in this box are products that would be difficult to buy regularly on a fixed income. This program is such a good way to make sure seniors in our community are getting the nutrition they need.”

To be eligible, a person must be at least 60 years old and at or below 130 percent of the Federal poverty income guideline based on household size. For example, a person living alone would need to have a gross income of less than $1,354 per month. A household of two people would need to have less than $1,868 per month.
